My Favorite Day

I’ve discovered my most favorite part of the whole growing season… the day before the first freeze.

When we bundle up and go outside with our baskets and sheers and harvest every last little bit that the garden has to offer.

My mama came out to show me how to pickle beets… which is a LOT of work and stains everything blood red. Very thankful for her.

We dehydrated dill, hung sage in the windows, dried mint for tea, gathered pinecones, and ate fresh picked salad with a crusty focaccia that’s simply amazing.

Now I understand why harvest celebrations happen in November. We filled the larder as full as it will be this year, and gave thanks to the soil for its abundance.
